This was the last week of the mentorship programme. We had received some great feedback over the past few weeks from our mentor on various topics — coding platforms, tools for mock interview preparation, resume review and feedback, tips for writing SOPs, scholarships opportunities, how to contribute to open source, other open-source opportunities, do we were thinking what all we can discuss more. Then Shristi requested if Bani di could review our LinkedIn profile then it would be great. So she gave personal feedback to each one of us.

I have shortlisted a few points when she reviewed our profiles which are as-

  1. It is always great to have a professional picture as our profile picture
  2. Always include all the achievements- be it scholarships, some prize in a hackathon, any open-source contribution, Leader of any organisation or any position held. They contribute to a great extent in getting our profile noticed when we comment on some post.
  3. Have a detailed About section showing your interest in technology and citing examples of the work that you have done so far to support it.
  4. Mention all your hackathon and other personal projects with the tech-stack used, libraries used, then the practicality and purpose of the project and the market which will be affected and how your project stands out.
  5. Include the non-technical stuff also, like if you are a part of any community and how you have contributed to the community. It is also a good idea to include leadership skills if any.
  6. Also, whatever post we like on or comment on has a great impact on LinkedIn’s recommendation system. So be sure to react to the kinds of post you are interested in.

After this, she introduced us to the many communities and also the importance of being a part of them. How positively it build our communication, management and leadership skills for later stages of life. She suggested us the name of some communities-

  1. Google Women Techmaker
  2. DSCs(Developer Students Club)
  3. Google Developer Circle
  4. Facebook Developer Circle
  5. LeanIn
  6. Ladies Storm Hackathon
  7. Systers

To contribute to such communities she told us that we can ask people how we can contribute after telling them our strengths, tell them what brought us to the table, follow it through and then make our commitments as our strength. This way we can build our brand in the community.

She suggested that placements should be one’s focus but we shouldn’t keep ourselves limited to that only. There is a lot to explore during the 4 years of our college and it is up to us to make the most out if it and do our part in applying these technologies and contributing to the society with our knowledge.

Her advice and guidance really helped me changed my perspective on many things and helped me get back on track. After this, Bani di started telling us her life stories and how she was motivated to stand out from the crowd and do exceptional things. Listening to her anecdotes inspired me a lot. These 5 weeks were amazing and I am thankful to WWCD for giving me this opportunity and to destiny for giving me Bani di as my mentor.
